Impression was thrilled to work alongside Bolton Library & Museum Services to deliver this exciting new exhibition for Bolton Museum, including bespoke props, unique graphics and signage.
⚽ Going to the Match! Unique exhibition design & installation for Bolton Museum, Greater Manchester
Bolton's "Going to the Match" exhibition opened on 23rd March 2023, celebrating L.S. Lowry and Bolton's footballing history, right up to the modern day. Showcased at its heart is the iconic L.S. Lowry painting 'Going to the Match', which was recently purchased by The Lowry in Salford for £8.1m, made possible by a private donation.
With this notable artwork now back on display, Bolton Museum wanted to accompany it with local football-themed exhibits, memories and related artwork, particularly as Bolton Wanderers this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of its first FA Cup Final victory in 1923.
🏆 Not only that, but this coming weekend Bolton Wanderers take on Plymouth Argyle at Wembley in the Football League Trophy Final - excellent timing, as Bolton's fans prepare to 'Go to the Match' themselves!
The Going to the Match exhibition is sponsored by Bolton Wanderers in the Community, The Lowry and Arts Council England.

Football and art are brought together by Going to the Match. Our Impression team enjoyed working alongside illustrator Lucia Vinti on this project, who created a unique, fun and eye-catching illustrated 'Lowry's Walk' feature along walls of the exhibition space, taking visitors through Bolton's sights and landmarks before arriving at Burnden Park.
Impression consulted with Bolton Museum on its plans for Going to the Match, including identification of the client's timescales and intended outcomes to ensure that our work was delivered on time and in line with the Museum's vision.
Our Design studio collaborated with Lucia and the Museum to plan the exhibition space, creating unique visuals including entrance 'floodlights', signage, exhibition displays and wall graphics, and unique interactive props to engage visitors of all ages.
All signage, wall vinyls, large format graphics and exhibit display signage for Bolton Museum's 'Going to the Match' were produced in-house by Impression's Create team, using robust materials which will continue to make a visual impact throughout the 3-month exhibition.
Installation by Impression was completed in line with the client's timescales, ready for the exhibition's preview event prior to opening to the public. Impression's Deliver signage installation team will also support Bolton Museum with removal and take-down of materials following the exhibition's close on 25th June 2023.
