Bolton Central Library

Engaging retail unit fit-out for library town centre pop-up

The brief

Bolton Library & Museum Services announced a major renovation and refurbishment of Bolton Central Library in 2022. The £3.7m project, funded through the Towns Fund, will include a café, upgraded children’s area, improved social areas, new digital facilities and construction of an additional mezzanine floor.

With the Central Library closed while works are underway, the Library & Museum Services team moved this important facility to a retail unit in Bolton town centre’s Crompton Place, creating a pop-up library with access for visitors to digital and other essential community services. Impression worked with the Library & Museum Services team to develop fun and engaging window displays, visual schemes and internal signage that would bring excellent visibility and encourage footfall into this temporary unit.

Consult

Impression has plenty of experience in working with Bolton Library & Museum Services under our belts, benefiting from strong relationships and an excellent understanding of the team’s exciting vision for its service delivery.

Coupled with our substantial experience in working with the retail sector to create unique signage, display and visual branding schemes that make the most of units’ architectural features, we worked alongside the Library team to identify opportunities within the unit’s layout and frontage for the on-time installation of highly visual displays, including hanging graphics, window vinyls, bespoke props and standees, internal signage and shop front fascias, which would catch the eye of passers-by, including those who may otherwise not frequently visit the Central Library building.

Design

Our Design team created visual branding schemes from scratch for each shop frontage element, in line with the client team’s intended themes and encompassing a range of signage and graphics features that would add humour, interest and encourage those passing to call in.

Following our Consult strategy and detailed sketches, our studio got creative with imaginative designs and graphics for visual window installations which focused on encouraging children’s coding, adventure fiction, adult ancestry and research facilities, and promoted the library’s adult crime literature, liaising throughout with the client Library team to ensure artwork met their vision and intended project outcomes.

Create

All signage, graphics and display products were printed, manufactured and finished in-house by Impression’s Bolton-based team in Greater Manchester. With a production schedule planned and monitored by our Production Manager, and led by our Consult strategy for launch, manufacture of all visual branding products was completed in time to meet the client’s launch timescales.

Work, including large format hanging graphics and displays, window vinyls, floor vinyls, bespoke props, external shop-front fascia signage and internal wayfinding and signposting signage, was quality-assured throughout by Impression’s team to maintain the highest levels of print consistency, quality and clarity, and to ensure that products would continue to make an impact throughout the lifetime of the pop-up unit.

Deliver

Impression’s experienced Installation Manager planned the complete implementation of the Bolton Library pop-up visual branding scheme, ensuring that all window displays and essential internal and external branding was in place in readiness for the pop-up unit’s launch.

Ready on schedule, our in-house, CSCS-accredited installation team delivered every element seamlessly, bringing the client’s desired impact to life with a perfect fit, as per original drawings – including an impromptu modelling session for the crime scene window! Impression will also support the Library & Museum Services team with take-down of materials following the library’s move back into its refurbished home.
