Thornleigh Salesian College in Bolton is a thriving high school with strong values at its heart, striving to develop students into confident, empathetic and responsible young adults. The school is located on the outskirts of Bolton, attracting students from a wide area.
Impression was invited to work with Thornleigh’s Music Department to create a unique timeline, stretching throughout the department and charting the history of music from the medieval era through to present day. We were pleased to support the school with this fascinating large format graphics and signage project, creating an interactive educational display which will immerse students in Music for years to come.

Thornleigh’s Music department is a thriving part of the school, where students are actively encouraged to participate in and enjoy music of all forms. The department’s transition areas offered excellent space for learning points as students travelled between classrooms, with large classroom wall spaces also presenting good opportunities for additional learning and student engagement.
We surveyed the department, speaking in depth with our client about its goal to create a musical timeline reaching throughout the internal areas, planning a scheme which made the most of the previously empty spaces and accommodating building features such as stairs. Large format graphics and signage was to include multiple points of interest, from objects and images to ‘Listen to…’ learning points, immersing, informing and exciting students in the subject.
The Thornleigh Music project sparked great creativity in our design team, sharing and revelling in our client’s passion for music. Working in partnership with our client, which supplied information to be incorporated into our large format graphics, Impression incorporated visually appealing information along a timeline design branded to suit internal décor and flowing through corridors and learning areas.
It was important to incorporate interactive elements into designs throughout the department, which was achieved through positioning of objects and memorabilia, as well as cut-out elements which stand proud of the wall graphics, hanging ceiling displays in corner areas and roundels showcasing suggested music of relevant periods for students to listen to.
Impression’s local team printed and finished the complete Thornleigh music department timeline in-house at our Bolton headquarters. Large format graphics were printed and cut to precise dimensions, using strong and robust materials which would withstand many years of use by Thornleigh students.
Print clarity is critical to our work. Images and graphics were printed to a high standard using our state-of-the-art flatbed print technology, displaying archive photographs and older images as beautifully as more current assets. Production was quality assured from start to finish by our Production Manager, with our print schedule carefully planned to ensure consistency and timely delivery to site.
Installation on site at Thornleigh was managed by our Installation Manager, with our installation team fully DBS-checked and CSCS-accredited for reassurance that our work on site is handled professionally, backed by all necessary risk assessments for a quality approach to signage projects for school clients.
Thornleigh’s Music department installation was scheduled and completed outside of the school day, minimising disruption to learning and allowing for greater impact when artwork was revealed to students. With the department continuing to grow in presence and attracting new learners, Impression’s team is pleased to hopefully inspire the next generation of local musicians.
Thornleigh Salesian College’s ‘History of Music’ timeline is an eye-catching, informative and educational piece which adds significant learning value to previously unused areas. Interactive and engaging, students are immersed in the subject of Music from the moment they enter the department.
