Receiving the Royal Charter in 1967, the University of Salford is now a thriving, campus-based institution serving around 23,000 students from the UK and internationally. The University’s heritage is rooted in industry, formed following a merger of technical colleges and institutes with the goal of preparing students for the world of work.
The University of Salford’s brand, focused on core values of Industry, Integrity and Initiative, is communicated across a huge range of media, from outreach signage and window graphics to internal wall graphics, wayfinding and directional signage, and informative displays which immerse students in their chosen study. Impression was engaged by the University to create an internal branding scheme for the Maxwell Building, a key campus landmark which is home to a number of departments including Salford Languages, the Business School and the Employability Hub.

Benefiting from years’ of experience in working with Universities across the North West, Impression quickly established a good working relationship with the Salford team to understand the meaning behind its brand and the specifics of the University’s brand guidelines.
In particular, our Consult team worked on site with the client to devise a comprehensive, and immersive, internal visual branding strategy and scheme for the relevant parts of the Maxwell Building, ensuring that the brand was presented professionally through the print and installation of large format graphics, acrylic signage and lettering, window graphics and informative wall displays. An installation schedule was planned to deliver the project during the University’s summer break, creating maximum impact on students’ return to campus.
As with any large organisation, the University of Salford operates to strict brand guidelines. Our Design studio worked with the University’s facilities and marketing teams to ensure consistency was maintained across all materials as each piece was prepared for print and manufacture.
Setting up artwork for print, quality-assuring our processes and liaising with the client throughout, the Design phase of this large, internal visual branding scheme was managed efficiently to keep the installation schedule on track.
Impression printed and manufactured all products in-house at our workshop in Bolton, Greater Manchester. Working alongside our Consult team to plan the production schedule, our Production Manager quality-assured all print and signage throughout production to ensure a seamless visual branding installation.
Featuring elements of the University of Salford’s brand identity throughout, and created using robust, hardwearing materials, our range of products included large floor-to-ceiling wall graphics, cut-out acrylic lettering, window graphics, wall vinyls incorporating wayfinding and employability support messages, and specific branding for areas including Salford Languages and Silks Law Clinic.
This sizeable internal visual branding project was installed over the University’s summer break in a number of phases, making for a significant impact on the return of staff and students in autumn.
Ensuring installation met the scheme’s Consult phase plan, Deliver was professionally completed by our Installation Manager and experienced, CSCS-accredited and DBS-checked team, seamlessly bringing to life this complex visual branding project across a number of floors in the Maxwell Building which will communicate and strengthen the University’s brand for years to come.
