Stunning print, graphics & signage for Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2021

The brief

Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, owned and operated by the University of Manchester, is home to The Royal Observatory Greenwich’s popular Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition, running from 24th April – 31st October 2021 and featuring some of the competition’s winning entries.

Impression works closely with the University and Jodrell Bank operational team, enjoying an excellent relationship which has already seen us support the client’s reopening following pandemic closure and the development of the spectacular new First Light Pavilion. More here! In 2021, we designed, printed and installed stunning outdoor and internal Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition displays to attract footfall and spark interest in this fascinating topic.

Pandemic-related restrictions meant that Impression and the Jodrell Bank team needed to think differently about the 2021 exhibition. With no internal visitors permitted until the summer, but outdoor spaces open, a scheme was devised to showcase competition entries outdoors on the Discovery Centre’s new Exhibition Pathway where visitors could enjoy the astrophotography safely. Internal exhibition spaces were subsequently opened to expand the display as guidelines permitted.

Having worked alongside the Jodrell Bank team for a number of years, Impression enjoyed excellent understanding of our client’s expectations for this exhibition. Crisp and clear, large format images of each competition entry was vital, with accompanying signage to guide visitors through the display, and robust materials which would withstand the unpredictable British weather.

For this exhibition, the entrants’ photography takes centre stage. Our design team treated every image with care, preparing artwork for print and accompanied by descriptions of each entry which we ensured wouldn’t distract from the quality of the competition imagery.

Large format displays were prepared for outdoor exhibition, accompanied by visitor signage that created a new experience to attract guests back to Jodrell Bank following closure. With the exhibition live from April until the end of October 2021, the outdoor scheme required hardy and durable structures and print of an exceptional standard, ensuring the competition entries continued to look their best. Internally, images and signage were displayed in a simple layout which ensured each image made impact.

Print and displays for the Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition were produced in-house by Impression’s Bolton-based team. Starting with the outdoor exhibition, we printed vinyls for each entry which were placed onto simple black metal frames. Two images were included on each three-post, V-shaped frame to maximise the space available whilst maintaining adequate distance between visitors.

Internal images were printed directly onto display boards, again prioritising clarity of print that highlighted the striking features of each entry. Production of outdoor and internal displays was phased, with quality monitored and assured to ensure consistency throughout.

As guidelines required, the outdoor Exhibition Pathway was installed and opened first, a month or so ahead of the internal displays. The Pathway was constructed by our client, and our Installation Manager Paul worked with the client’s facilities team to schedule outdoor installation of display frames in April.

We were back in May to complete the internal installation, having completed essential risk assessments prior to each installation date. Jodrell Bank’s First Light Pavilion is currently under construction, and our CSCS-certified Deliver team worked safely around the Discovery Centre site to meet our client’s exhibition timescales. Since opening, the exhibition has attracted visitors throughout the summer and impactfully highlighted the amateur photographers’ work featured.
