During the summer and early autumn 2021, Impression has worked closely with the University of Manchester to produce striking graphics, signage and interior visual branding schemes, and even bespoke literature display units, for an exceptional new building at the University which will enhance research, development and learning offers.

Ready in time for the University's new academic year and return of students for the autumn term, the installation for the Henry Royce Institute's Royce@Manchester facility puts academic vision and priorities at the heart of the scheme, continuing to build on the University of Manchester's reputation as a centre of excellence for science, engineering and innovation.

It ws a privilege for Impression to work on Royce's flagship 9-storey building at the University. The Henry Royce Institute at University of Manchester (Royce@Manchester) is the new UK national centre for advanced materials research, innovation and an important meeting place for the advanced materials community.

The Henry Royce Institute's vision is to identify challenges and stimulate innovation in advanced materials research, supporting sustainable growth and commercial exploitation of materials research in industry. The Institute provides access to state-of-the-art facilities and capabilities, enabling research nationally to deliver positive economic and societal impact UK-wide.

Royce@Manchester houses £45m worth of equipment and facilities, and the buildings allows for 'Science on Show', with areas of the building visible to the public outside encouraging engagement with its work. The Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) is the new home of engineering and material science at the University, with Engineering Building A and Engineering Building B both now open to students.

Consultancy that delivered striking graphics, signage & displays for University of Manchester

Impression's Consult phase was critical to the success of this project, reinforcing that our work is more than just print.

We enjoy an excellent relationship with the University's Estates Designer and his team, and it was exciting to see how our client put the academic needs of the building, and particularly the Henry Royce Institute's brand, vision and goals, at the heart of the graphics and visual branding scheme.

Directors Martin and Carl visited the site to conduct a full site survey and obtain fully accurate sizing for all target areas of the building, preparing a bespoke graphics, signage and display scheme using precise measurements. This partnership-led and hands-on approach is integral to the success of every project; not only can we be sure that visual branding and large format graphics will be a perfect fit once printed, cut and installed, but we can recommend opportunities to bring uniqueness to the project, creating further engagement and talking points amongst staff, visitors and students.

Large format graphics, signage & displays with purpose

We met our client team to discuss the academic purpose behind the building and to understand how graphics, signage and displays will be used to convey the values behind the Henry Royce Institute's Manchester facility, the work it does and the culture of scientific innovation supported by the new building.

Ensuring precision in the production and installation of materials with visual and practical appeal, Consult allowed us to delve deeper into the project and deliver a scheme that both the University and its academic users would take pride in, adding value and delivering a sense of purpose, belonging and innovation throughout the building.
